The Unity Centered Design and Dunk Expo!
Sunday, October 20th @ The Newburgh Armory Unity Center (NAUC)
The Unity Centered Design and Dunk Expo: Two NCAA basketball teams, local basketball stars, and leaders in the design industry and youth education will team up with the best sneakers vendors and enthusiasts in the Hudson Valley to deliver a dynamic three-part event. All proceeds will benefit youth education programs at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center (NAUC). This one-day event will offer free youth basketball clinics for grades 3-7, with educational breakout sessions throughout the day, 3-point and dunk contests between Marist and Mount Saint Mary College, and the 1st annual Hudson Valley Sneaker Expo, attracting sneaker vendors and enthusiasts throughout the region. NAUC’s state-of-the-art event, athletic, and educational facilities are utilized by thousands throughout the region seeking high quality academic, athletic and entertainment experiences.
About the Unity Center: When the Newburgh Armory Unity Center opened for business as a registered 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization in 2010, the primary goal was to provide a safe haven for Newburgh’s children and their parents to enjoy sports programming. At that time all programming took place on a small but nicely refurbished gymnasium and a much larger but completely unfinished indoor event space. What developed in a shorter time than anyone could have imagined then was a thriving and vibrant community center that is now an anchor and welcome refuge for tens of thousands of Newburgh area residents every year, as well as a nationally and internationally recognized model for those looking for urban revitalization solutions for their distressed cities. The key to its success as a truly innovative education and recreation center has been the partnerships and collaborations that have rapidly developed at the NAUC involving city, county, and state officials and agencies, an ever-widening network of community-based organizations and services providers and hundreds of volunteers.
Hudson Valley Sneaker Expo: This first-ever Hudson Valley area event brings together the best vendors in the Tri-State region’s sneaker and specialty footwear industry for a buy, sell, and trade frenzy for footwear and apparel enthusiasts. All patrons will have access to the hottest kicks, gear, and accessories from top-notch vendors local to the area. Whether you are looking to check out some crazy displays or buy, sell and trade with the masses, the expo provides the connection for attendees of all ages.
Youth Basketball Clinic: In collaboration with the Mount Saint Mary and Marist College Basketball teams, the Youth Basketball Clinic will provide basketball skill-building sessions in the morning and afternoon. Participants will also take part in break-out sessions led by professionals in the graphic design, basketball, and education fields which will focus on graphic and marketing, developing leadership, rule interpretation, and sports science.
Local Stars Skills Showcase: Scholar athletes from the Marist and Mount Saint Mary College basketball teams will be volunteering to facilitate the youth basketball clinic throughout the morning and early afternoon. At approximately 4:00 PM participants in the youth basketball clinic and VIP ticket holders will assemble to observe a skills showcase showdown between Marist and Mount Saint Mary College teams. The showcase will begin with 3 representatives from each school giving their best shot in a classic 3-point shooting contest. Three representatives from each school will then display their dunk skills in a creative dunk challenge where they will be scored by judges from the local community and VIP guests.
