
The NAUC Saturday Morning Enrichment Program (SMEP) provides free academic and sports education to Newburgh families. Our goals are to improve literacy skills, instill a lifelong love of learning, and provide career exploration experiences for Newburgh’s youth. For every sport/recreational class your child takes, he/she must also take an academic class! We strongly encourage new families to register for our reading, math, and writing classes to begin. We also recommend that returning students take these classes yearly to continue improving their fundamental skills.

Summer is here! The days are sunny and bright, school is out, and adventures are waiting everywhere you look. Come join us as we read, imagine, and explore together! Each week, we’ll dive into exciting stories and enjoy fun, hands-on activities inspired by the energy and excitement of summer.
All readers are encouraged to check out books from the library to keep the adventure going all summer long. Let’s learn, discover, and read together this summer!
n Wild Readers: Read, Rhythm, and Rhyme, we invite students to explore the link between reading and music through engaging activities. This may include read-alouds, songs, rhythm, poetry, and performance-based literacy tasks. We will create rhythms, explore rhyme, use instruments or body percussion, practice expressive reading, and collaborate on musical responses to texts. These creative activities aim to strengthen reading skills such as fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and expression. This class is suitable for students in grades 3–6 at various reading levels, with no prior musical experience required—just a willingness to listen, move, and have fun with reading!

Families Play, Learn and Grow Together will introduce you and your child to the many ways play can support learning and growth here and at home! Play is essential to developing young bodies, minds, and social skills, and it plays a crucial role in preparing children for school. Through hands-on activities and engaging play, children learn valuable school readiness skills. This class is for toddlers, preschool aged children, and their participating grown-up(s).

Engage in unique and fun math activities to develop your skills and knowledge in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Become problem-solvers and learn how to use tools and methods of mathematicians.

The Newburgh Naturalist program is designed for grades 1-3, to learn about our local environment and beyond. In each class, students will learn about an animal or ecology topic by playing games, making a craft, and even getting to meet a live animal. This special program, taught by a Hudson Highland Nature Museum educator, helps to nurture love and respect for our environment and teaches students about all aspects of the Hudson Highlands in a fun and hands-on way. (1st-3rd)

The Knee High Naturalist program is designed for 4-year-olds, with a caregiver, to learn about nature. In each class, toddlers and their grown-ups learn about an animal or ecology topic by reading a book, making a craft, and even getting to meet a live animal. This special program, taught by a Hudson Highland Nature Museum educator, helps to nurture love and respect for our environment and teaches about the animals and plants of the Hudson Highlands in a fun and hands-on way. It’s also a great way to prepare for preschool.

Get ready for a super fun science adventure for grades 3-6! We’ll do awesome experiments, explore cool science ideas, and see how history and different cultures have helped shape the science we use today. Each class is like a journey where you get to discover how science has evolved and learn more about the amazing world around us!

Learn reading and spelling skills through exciting and fun multi-sensory activities! You will practice how to say, spell, and write the 44 phonemes (or speech sounds) and syllables that are used as building blocks to make every English word. This builds a strong foundation for reading success for a lifetime!

Art in the Garden is an adventure into a variety of artistic techniques and styles in drawing and painting while partnering with the NAUC Garden. This is a project-based fun and exciting course that will develop and grow as your child does. Young artists will create original works of art in sculpture, pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, ink, and acrylic all while learning how to effectively use art vocabulary to describe their creative process. We teach the skills of drawing and painting but the skills of collaboration, creativity, and experimentation will last a lifetime!

Join us in our indoor/outdoor Agricultural Learning Place (ALP) to investigate the hidden clues of the life of a farmer. We’ll explore our ALP: the garden, the orchard, the pond, and the livestock to better understand the land and its treasures. Students will have a greater awareness and a better appreciation of our greater world and all it offers.

In this class, we will explore the fun moves of classical ballet. By the end of the semester you will know and perfect a dance routine.

Young stylists will learn the basics of managing and styling hair with hands-on instruction. This class will provide an introduction to cosmetology and the best practices in caring for hair in general. Sessions will include classroom fun and activities to encourage and inspire inner beauty.

We have a super cool room full of Lego blocks where you can let your imagination run wild! You’ll get to work on your own Lego creations and do fun projects that help you learn about math, science, nursing, history, architecture, engineering, reading, drones, and so much more!. It’s going to be awesome and full of adventures with Legos!
Have you ever wanted to learn how to DJ? � � Now’s your chance! In this fun and hands-on class, students will learn the basics of DJing, including the history of DJs, the equipment used, and how everything works together. We’ll explore DJ software like Serato DJ, learn how to load and organize songs, count beats and BPM, and practice different ways to mix and transition music together. Students will also get introduced to scratching techniques and harmonic mixing using the Camelot Wheel.
This class is all about learning by doing, so students won’t just watch — they’ll get to try it themselves and be part of the DJ experience. Let’s have fun exploring the art of DJing together!

This class is all about having fun and staying active! Each week, you’ll get to try new dance styles like Salsa, Lyrical, Step, Hip Hop, and even Aerobics! Everyone is welcome to join in and have a great time!

Chess is an awesome game where you get to use your brain to plan and think ahead! We’ll teach you how to play, including the rules and strategies to win. You’ll also learn how to read and write down chess moves. Whether you’re new to chess or have played before, everyone is welcome to join and have fun!

Newburgh Film Fans is a class dedicated to the love of film. While we may not be making movies, we will be watching movies to understand their storytelling, writing, themes and ideas and how they translate into our lives. Whether it be animation, action, drama or fantasy, movies impact us in many ways.

Sewing is a great way to express your creative talents! Learn how to use a sewing machine, including the mechanics of threading and various functions. You will work with a pattern to make pillows, tote bags, and other items. You will also learn hand sewing to complete a finished item.

All dancers are welcome to join our class, even beginners! Learn fun dances from all over the world and use your moves to tell stories. We’ll try out different dance styles and even travel to perform outside of the Newburgh Armory Unity Center.
In this class, students will embark on a creative journey that encourages them to explore various forms of arts, crafts, and techniques. Students will also gain knowledge of various artists, from the past and present, as well as a brief history of their renowned works. The goal of this class is to awaken the artist within through inspiration, while encouraging self-expression, community, and the power of an artistic voice.

Learn the drills and skills needed to play the game. Dribbling, layups, shooting, and more. Our program teaches foundational skills and discipline, in a way that is fun for all, and then puts these skills to the test using scrimmages.

For over 15 years, Zen Martial Arts NY and AKB Life Coaching have offered family-centered programs that go beyond physical training. Through martial arts and guided coaching, we help parents, children, and teens build stronger bonds, develop life skills, and grow together in a supportive and inclusive community.
Students will dive into the world of web development by learning how to create their own websites using HTML and CSS. Through engaging, hands-on projects, students will design web pages and learn about coding logic and structure. They’ll also be introduced to other programming languages and the history of coding.
This class provides a fun and interactive introduction to computer literacy. Through colorful visuals, educational games, and hands-on activities, students will develop foundational computing skills. They will learn how computers work, practice using a mouse and keyboard, identify computer parts, and explore simple applications.
In Drone Flight School, we provide practical, hands-on instruction that gives learners the exciting experience of flying a drone, while learning the FAA-required rules and safety procedures. Drone Cadets goes a step beyond, offering coding autonomous drone flight to promote further STEM learning and provide real-world career insights.
Do you have a need for speed? Drone Racing comes to the Hudson Valley with our first-ever Newburgh Armory Drone Racing Club. Learn First-Person View (FPV) Drone Racing and you’ll feel like you are riding in the cockpit of the drone. As our club gets experienced we’ll begin racing other teams in the Hudson Valley.
This class focuses on the everyday computer skills students need for school and beyond. Learners will practice keyboarding, mouse control, and safe computer handling. They’ll explore operating systems, identify computer components, and gain an understanding of cybersecurity and online safety.
Students will explore the basics of block-based coding using Scratch, a beginner-friendly programming platform. They’ll create animations, interactive stories, and fun games while developing logical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Step into the world of healthcare with Scholars in Scrubs! Each week, explore a new healthcare field— whether it’s being a doctor, nurse, or scientist. Dive into hands-on activities, from diagnosing illnesses to exploring hands-on skills in our mini-hospital, or perhaps experimenting with cool science projects.
